Ice and water shield is a self-adhering rubberized asphalt membrane that bonds directly to your roof deck before the shingles go on. It seals around every nail that penetrates it, so even if a shingle blows off in a storm, water cannot enter through the fastener holes.
That self-sealing property is what separates it from every other underlayment product on the market. Standard felt or synthetic underlayment is water-resistant. Ice and water shield is waterproof at the fastener level. That distinction matters during a Texas thunderstorm with 70 mph winds.

Ice and water shield doesn’t cover the entire roof surface, it targets the most vulnerable zones:
- Valleys: where two roof planes meet and water concentrates
- Eaves:a minimum of 24 inches up from the drip edge
- Around chimneys, skylights, and pipe boots:18–24 inches on all sides of every penetration

Texas Building Code Requirements (IRC)
The International Residential Code, adopted in Texas, requires ice and water shield at all valleys and at eaves for homes in climate zones where the average January temperature is 25°F or below. DFW and most of North Texas fall into this zone.

What Winter Storm Uri Taught Us About Ice on Texas Roofs
February 2021 was a reminder that ice events in Texas are real, even if rare. Homeowners across DFW, Austin, and San Antonio saw ice dam formation at their eaves, a phenomenon most had never encountered. When ice built up and water backed up under shingles, the homes with proper ice and water shield coverage at the eaves had dramatically less interior water damage than those without it.
Uri was a one-in-a-decade event. But it confirmed that the product earns its name in Texas, too.
Where Ice and Water Shield Gets Installed
Valleys (The Most Vulnerable Spot)
A valley channels every raindrop that falls on two adjacent roof planes into a single concentrated path. During a DFW thunderstorm, the volume of water moving through a valley is significant. Any gap in protection here creates a direct path to the roof deck and sheathing. Ice and water shield in the valley is non-negotiable.
Eaves (First 24 Inches Minimum)
At the eaves, ice and water shield runs from the drip edge up a minimum of 24 inches. In cold-climate applications, which includes DFW under the IRC, it should extend to the interior wall line plus 24 additional inches. This covers both wind-driven rain infiltration at the roof edge and the ice dam backup zone that Uri exposed.
Around Chimneys, Skylights, and Pipe Boots
Every penetration is a potential entry point. Roof flashing goes around chimneys and skylights, but it sits on top of the deck, and flashing is only as watertight as what’s underneath it. Ice and water shield should cover 18–24 inches on all sides of every penetration before the flashing is set. When contractors skip this step, leaks around chimneys and skylights are the predictable result.
Rakes (Recommended Upgrade)
The rakes, the sloped edges on the sides of your roof, aren’t always required by code, but they’re a smart upgrade. DFW wind patterns frequently attack rake edges during severe storms. Adding ice and water shield here costs roughly $30–50 on a typical home.

The line item “ice and water shield” on a roofing estimate often shows up without detail, or it’s quietly bundled with no specifics. These three questions separate a quality install from a shortcut.
What Brand Are You Using?
Off-brand products can meet minimum code but not GAF warranty requirements. GAF’s System Plus and Golden Pledge warranties, the top two warranty tiers, require GAF WeatherWatch® or GAF StormGuard® specifically. If a contractor is installing a competing membrane, your GAF warranty may not hold at the highest coverage level.
