Not everyone has the luxury of covered parking. Sometimes, hail storms strike while people are out at uncovered locations, as well! Hail is something nearly all drivers fear but most will, unfortunately, have to deal with. If you’re someone who is tired of saying “oh hail no” to storm damage, here are a few ways you can protect your car during a hail storm if you don’t have good parking coverage:

Shell out money for a car cover.

If you don’t have a place to shelter your vehicle, consider getting a multi-layer cover. Most car covers will fit snugly around your vehicle and protect it from a variety of weather conditions. If you’re really protective about your car, there are hail-specific protection devices that run $200 or more.

Fold in your side mirrors before a storm.

Hail can crack side mirrors due to the thinness of the mirrors. Folding them can protect the mirror itself and reduce the casing’s exposure to hail.

Try blankets or towels.

If you’ve got old quilts or heavy blankets laying around, consider putting them on top of your car. (This will likely take multiple blankets or towels.) They’re not as fancy as a formal hail blanket, but they can provide a cushioned barrier against hail. Don’t tape your blankets to the car, as duct tape can peel away paint, especially after being exposed to the elements.

Consider splurging on a parking garage for the storm.

If you live in a large city, consider paying for a few hours of covered parking in a parking garage. Those $5 – $15 can save you the money and headache of dealing with glass repair or an insurance claim.

Make sure you have comprehensive coverage.

If you’re in a hail-prone area, you likely already have comprehensive coverage. However, it never hurts to double-check your policy. If you have an auto liability policy, getting hail dents or cracked windshields fixed will likely come out of pocket rather than covered by insurance.
